LONDON Nujira Ltd , a start-up that has patented and developed efficient power amplifiers for wireless infrastructure, has sealed its first major OEM deal, and is working with Japan's Sumitomo Electric Industries (SEI) to develop power efficient RF power amplifiers for WiMAX and LTE basestations.
The deal is significant because Japan often leads the way in the cellular industry, and Nujira's High Accuracy Tracking (HAT) technology could play a major role in enabling more energy efficient and environmentally friendly next generation base stations for the Japanese and global cellular markets.
Under the terms of their agreement, announced at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, SEI will develop and market high power RF amplifiers targeted at next generation cellular base stations using Nujira's HAT module.
Tim Haynes, CEO of Nujira (Cambridge, England), said: "Working with a strategic partner such as Sumitomo is very important to Nujira, especially given their strong market presence in Japan, the first country in the world to deploy LTE commercially. Nujira's technology enables infrastructure vendors to reduce the power consumption and size of base stations, reducing both network rollout costs and ongoing energy costs an increasingly important consideration for operators worldwide."
Nujira's VP of strategy, Julian Hindersley, suggests current power amplifier designs for W-CDMA, WiMAX and LTE are very inefficient and could be significantly improved using the HAT technology, which dynamically controls the power supplied to the amplifier ensuring that very little is wasted as heat.
