Chelmsford, MA — Hittite Microwave Corporation has introduced its fifth logarithmic detector/controller product which is ideal for RF power measurement and control in cellular/PCS/3G, WiMAX, WiBro, fixed wireless, radio link and radar applications over the 50 Hz to 3 GHz frequency range.

The HMC612LP4(E) logarithmic detector/controller is fabricated in a SiGe BiCMOS process, and converts RF signals at its differential input to a proportional output DC voltage. It delivers an extremely high ±1 dB dynamic range of greater than 60 dB up to 0.9 GHz, and 45 dB dynamic range at 3 GHz with outstanding temperature stability over the -40 to +85 degrees Celsius operating temperature range. At input frequencies from 50 Hz to 0.9 GHz, a ±3 dB dynamic range of up to 75 dB can be achieved.
In logarithmic detection mode the HMC612LP4(E) provides a nominal logarithmic slope of 19 mV/dB and a nominal intercept of -99 dBm. The device operates with a supply voltage from +2.7 V to +5.5 V, consuming 29 mA at +3.3 V. Ideal for applications such as RF transmitter power amplifier control, RSSI measurement in cellular basestations, radio link and radar, the logarithmic detector/controller also exhibits 19/100 ns rise and fall times, and provides a wide video bandwidth, similar to the previously released HMC601LP4(E).
The HMC612LP4(E) may also be operated in controller mode, which allows for an external voltage to be applied to the VSET pin, to create an automatic gain control feedback loop which is ideal for RF power monitoring and control circuits. Ideal for space-constrained applications, the device is housed in a compact 4x4 mm plastic QFN package.
