The “SystemOnModule” approach of the ZWIR45xx family of wireless modules from IDT make these products an ideal choice for embedding wireless connectivity into EDC’s SmartFIT Connect Platform.

“Our collaboration with IDT just started a few months ago,” said Dr. Steffen Heinz, co-founder and CEO of Electronic Design Chemnitz GmbH. “We quickly decided to use IDT’s secure wireless modules, as we saw a huge advantage in running the complete sensor data acquisition on the wireless module on top of the 6LoWPAN stack.”

“The fully featured over-the-air update (OTAU) capability further enables us to distribute firmware upgrades or new algorithms to every sensor node in the future,” said André Lange, co-founder and CEO of Electronic Design Chemnitz GmbH.

The ZWIR4532 is a programmable low-power secure IPv6 communication module for IoT device networks. Sensors and devices can operate autonomously or connect to local or global IPv6 networks using the device. It serves as a universal secure radio communication module for applications with low bandwidth requirements.

A complete and fully-featured IoT connectivity module, the ZWIR4532 includes an Arm® microcontroller, a sub-Gigahertz radio transceiver and optional license-free IDT firmware download. It is ideal for IoT connectivity thanks to its support for native communication with computers and mobile devices through IPv6, and its ability to create secure, self-healing ad-hoc mesh networks that cover large areas and long ranges based on open standard security protocols.


The low power consumption and small form factor of the ZWIR4532 module – approximately half that of other ZWIR45xx modules – makes it ideal for embedding into a variety of IoT-connected consumer, industrial and medical devices with space constraints, including home automation devices, factory automation monitors, environmental sensors and LED lamps for smart city applications.

The modules ultra-low-power ARM® Cortex™-M0+ 32-bit microcontroller runs the network stack. In addition, the user application can run on the microcontroller. This helps minimizing the size, complexity and overall BOM. A rich set of digital and analog peripherals is available for interfacing with external application components. Approximately 128kB of flash and 4kB of RAM are available for user applications.
